Methods of Flu Treatment for Children

The flu is a very scary thing for your child to have. That's because not only does the flu affect the stomach more than anything else in a child in most cases but the psychological effects of the flu can be dangerous. The immune system of the child is also going to be weaker and will not be able to fight the flu symptoms as easily. However, there are various forms of flu treatment for children to use.

If you see your child suffering from any of the common flu symptoms you should be sure to give the child enough rest and to keep from getting into any physical activity. This is going to be needed so that the body will be able to fight off the flu at a better rate. Also, having your child hydrated is going to be important. Water is the best option to use, but sports drinks with isotonic properties are also useful. This is needed because being able to replace the liquids lost from the flu is important for treating the flu.

One of the most common flu symptoms is diarrhea. This can be treated when the victim is hydrated. Other items, especially more dangerous materials, can be dangerous to the immune system and make it harder to fight off the virus. Therefore, if you have been smoking it is better to have someone else take care of the child.

You should avoid giving aspirin to the child with the flu. Aspirin is not one of the flu medicines to use in that while there is generally a fever in the flu there is always the risk of Reye Syndrome. This is a condition that can be fatal in that it significantly damages the liver when the person has the flu. Also, the rise in body temperature as a result of the fever should not be treated in that it will be used as a means of naturally fighting infections like the flu.

There are some flu medicines that can be used. Antadine, eltavimir and rimantidine are the best and most recommended flu medicines to use. These are only available by prescription through your child's doctor. Another drug, which is zanamivir, has been approved for use in the United States for treating the flu as well.

Some over the counter flu medicines can be used too, but they will not treat the entire problem. These medicines will help to only treat the symptoms of the flu, including body aches, congestion and fatigue. Pain relievers and antihistamines are common in these medicines, but they will not treat the actual flu virus.

You should avoid alternative treatments of the flu as well. While these are all useful you should watch out in that these alternative treatments have not been scientifically proven and in some cases can only make the flu worse. For additional details on this you should talk with your family doctor for assistance.

Flu treatment for children is something to be especially concerned about. The flu can be tough for the child, and there are some simple things to do to help treat the child. Also, it is best to watch for the medicines that can be used, including avoiding the use of aspirin. These are all important considerations that can help you and your child.
